Send SMS to any Mobile Right From Your Inbox

Posted on Monday, August 11, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

Email To SMS160by2 provides an Email to SMS facility which let you send SMS to any mobile number within India right from your Email client, thereby saving you from the trouble of a separate pageload and login. 160by2 will deliver the message in packets of 80 characters (each SMS will contain 80 characters of the message) and the delivery is almost instant. We tested this facility and we received the SMS within 30 seconds. You will also get an Email from 160by2 that confirms the delivery of your SMS.

Before you can start sending Email SMS's, you will need a 160by2 account. Signup is free and will not take more than 5 minutes. During signup, you have to provide the Email id from which you are planning to send SMS.

To Send SMS via your Email, the message has to be formatted as described below.
  • The recipient should be recipient’s mobile number, followed by @160by2.com so that it reads <receiver mobile number>@160by2.com. For example: If the recipient is 9995394558 then the recipient Email address in your Email program must look like 9995394558@160by2.com
  • The Subject line must be your username of 160by2 or your mobile number that you used to signup with 160by2. If the Email address and the username or mobile number does not match, an Email from 160by2 will report the failure of delivery.
The greatest advantage of this service is that the SMS can be sent irrespective of the email program you use. So even if your employer blocks all email services except the company email, you can signup with 160by2 with the company email and then send SMS to all your friends.

Send Free SMS To Any Mobile In India Using GPRS

Posted on Monday, February 11, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

Do you have a Mobile phone with a GPRS connection.. ? Then this is for you. A website named www.160by2.com is offering a service whcih allows users to send sms to any mobile number in India for free. Your message can be 80 characters long. The remaining 80 characters is filled up by advertisments chosen by 160by2. So basically its a new kind of advertising program. And now you know why it is named 160/2. 80 for the user and 80 for the advertiser

Here is the procedure :

  • Visit 160by2.com from your desktop, and sign up giving your personal details and mobile no.
  • You will recieve a password as sms on that mobile number and will be asked to change the password
  • Go to 160by2.com from your web browser on the mobile and sign in with the username and password.
  • Type in the recepient's mobile no. and the message and click on send.
  • You are done !

Some Good things about 160by2 :

  • The service is free.
  • Messages are delivered really fast.
  • We can make a contact list online, so its easy to add recepients.
  • And 80 characters is a decent length.
  • The mobile version of 160by2 uses very less bandwidth ( about 4 kb ). So those who are charged per kb of data transfer wont be charged.

Some not things about 160by2 :

  • There is no option to count the no. of characters. So you do not know whether you reached 80 or not. And even if we exceed 80 characters the message is sent with the first 80 charchaters. One way to get rid of this problem is to type the message in the phone's ' Write Message ' area ( The place where we write the normal sms's, there we have a character counter ) and copy the text to 160by2.
  • This is available in India only. No International SMS is possible.

Emergency FlashLight In Your Nokia SmartPhone

Posted on Wednesday, January 02, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

I have seen a software which when installed on your phone, keeps the display on for infinite time or till the battery dies out, so that you can use your phone as a flashlight for emergency purposes.

Here are some ways to keep the display on without any such softwares:

* The key combination to lock the keypad is to be used. Its a combination of 2 keys, first one is the left selelctor key ( In Nokia7610 ) followed by the '*' key. Press the first key followed by * and do not release the * key. Now the display stays on untill you release the * key.
Make sure that the background on your standby mode is of light colours so that you will get more light.

* One another method is to record a video of something white at some place where there is amble light. Usually Smartphones keep the display on while a video is being played. Now play the recorded video and the display stays on.

Tested on Nokia 7610 and must work with similar phones.
Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous 2008.
Good Luck!

How To Send Text Messages Via Bluetooth

Posted on Sunday, September 30, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

The Bluetooth functionality of mobile phones enables us to send files between bluetooth enabled devices. But usually bluetooth enabled phones do not have an in built feature with which we can send text messages via bluetooth to another bluetooth device in the vicinity. To do this usually we have to install some third party software.

There is another simple way to do this. This works on Nokia Smartphones. You can use the Notes application that comes pre-installed on the phone. Just type the message as a note and then press Options > Send > via Bluetooth. This sends the text as a message. To forward text messages that you have recieved, first copy that message to a note and then do the same as mentioned above.

I know that this is not a very handy option. But this is the only way out. Else you can find third party softwares that can even chat via text messages [ using Bluetooth ] .

Establish Paired Devices and Make Connections Without Confirmation On Your Mobile

Posted on Sunday, June 10, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Every time a bluetooth connection is to be made, a request is made into the recievers phone. This can be very irritating if large number of files have to sent one by one. Instead you can establish the other device as a paired device [ and you become the pair for the second device ]. The process to Establish pair device in Nokia 7610 is discussed here. It must work on other phones too...

* In your Nokia phone go to connectivity and take Bluetooth.
* Press right arrow to enter the 'Paired devices' section.
* Select Options and choose ' New paired device ' . Then the phone searches for devices in its surroundings. The Bluetooth in the second device must be turned on so as to be detected by the first one.
* From the list that appears select the second device.
* The Mobile asks for a passcode. Key in some number. Now a request is sent to the second device. When the second device asks for the passcode enter the same code as entered in the first.
* Now the devices are paired. It will appear in the paired devices list.
* Choose this device and press options.
* From the options menu select ' Set as authorised ' and press ' yes '.

Now data can be sent to your phone without your confirmation. If you have to send data to the second device that one must make you authorised.

Note that fully authorised pairing can be risky. As files will be sent without your knowledge your device becomes open to virus attacks from the second one. Authorise only if you are sure that its safe.

MillionClues Hacks Into a Nokia Enhancement

Posted on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

I had purchased a Headset [ Which will be referred as Hands-Free fom this point ] from a local dealer. It is not an original Nokia Enhancement.. and SO it started generating some stray sounds and made the speech deteriorated. So I thought of hacking in to the Hands-Free to know what the problem was. And I found the problem..! It was a loose contact between the microphone and the ciruit board. I got some picture of that hack for my valued readers...

The Components are ....... [ in serial number order... ]
1. This is the 9 pin connector which is plugged in to the phone.
2. This is the earphone.
3. This was the microphone [ condenser microphone ] that caused the problem.
4. The circuit board to whcih the microphone was connected to. See the holes from which the microphone tore off. The mic was attached from the other side of the board. The board also has an on-off swich at the centre. It is with this switch that calls are recived or ended.
5. The clip to attach the device to the tie-clip.
6. The coverings of the circuit board.

Please note that this is not the origional Nokia enhancement. This one is locally manufactured and is of less quality. The original enhancement may vary from this and is of very good quality.

Play Music For Your Callers While They Stay On-Hold

Posted on Monday, May 14, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Sometimes we have to tell our callers to stay on-hold. Staying for long can be really boring. You can play music while they are on-hold. I am speaking of Nokia smartphones .. ( like Nokia 7610, Nokia 6600, Nokia N Series .. ) ok..?

To do this...
Open the music file before the call starts. It would be better to keep it minimized always so that you can do this for incoming calls too. Then when you have to play music take the media player ( which is playing the music file.. ) from the minimized list of programs and click on play.

You can also do this by opening the music file while the call is in progress. But this can be a waste of time.

Some network providers have got an option to hold the call in the call options. Check with your local service provider for more details.

Store Photos Secretly In Your Nokia SmartPhone

Posted on Sunday, May 06, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Here is a rather simple way to store photos secretly in your Nokia Smartphone. When I say Smartphone I am reffering to phones like Nokia 7610, Nokia 6600, Nokia N series etc...

To do this ...
* Open the photo in the gallery.
* Set that photo as the desktop background ( Wallpaper ) and you are done.

The photo will be copied to the system files folder which is inaccesible by the file manager. It can only be accesed by third party softwares like File Exporer and so on. Now change the theme. No one can detect the presence of such a picture in the phone unless someone choose that theme ( The theme with which you have chosen the photo as its dektop background.. Lets Name it ' Theme x ' )

To see the picture go to Themes and preview ' Theme x '. You will be able to see the picture.
That's it.

To delete that picture select edit from the options of the theme and choose the Wallpaper as ' default '. Now that picture is gone.

Preview Themes 66% Faster

Posted on Thursday, May 03, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

This applies to Nokia smartphones ( like Nokia 7610 , Nokia 6600 , Nokia N series and so on...). The options of any Theme has an option to ' preview ' the Theme. But this preview takes a long time ( about 4 seconds to load the preview and 5 seconds to go back in my Nokia 7610 with amble memmory left and no programs running.. ).

To preivew the theme much faster choose the ' Apply ' option and go to the desktop ( By using the shortcut key. That key is the ' End Call ' button ). This takes about 3.5 seconds but there is no need to go back. So the overall speed is more by about 66%.

Things To Do Once You Purchase A Cell Phone

Posted on Tuesday, February 06, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Mobile Phones are a good part of the life these days. Apart from SMS's or Missed calls even the regular office works have started to creep in to the mobile phone. Also the number of stolen mobile phones is increasing day by day. To avoid the misuse of your phone and the data in it you have to do certain things from the time you purchase a mobile phone.

* Make sure that you dealer is valid and not an outlet of the grey market. You can ask for his dealership card or identity card.
* Write down the IMEI Number down some where safely. This number is usually found on the carton of the mobile device. Instead type *#06# on your mobile and you will get your IMEI number.
The IMEI Number is a 15 digit number and is unique to that cell phone. This number can come in to use once you loose your Mobile. Your service provider can block your mobile phone and make it useless using this Number.
Store it in a safe place so that you can acces it once needed.
* Give your identitiy proof and required papers to your service provider at the earliest and make sure everything is intact

The most important thing to do to make sure that you dont loose your phone is to be cautious when you are on the move.
Good Luck!

BlueTooth Versus InfraRed

Posted on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

This draws out a comparison Between the 2 most common Personal Area Networking ( PAN ) solutions commonly used. They are 1. BlueTooth and 2. InfraRed

* Both BlueTooth and InfraRed are used to communicate within short distances ( i.e. PAN ).
* BlueTooth used in mobile devices have a range of about 10 metres and can communicate with another BlueTooth capable device within a circle of 10 metre radius.
* InfraRed needs a direct line of contact. It means that 2 InfraRed Enabled devices can communicate with each other only if they are in a same line. The speed of data transfer decreases with increasing distance.
* With a InfraRed Device and proper Software to support, one can control other devices like a TV set or a DVD player. This cannot be achieved using a BlueTooth enabled device unless there is a BlueTooth adapter available with the other device.

Both these systems are energy efficient and uses very less power. But due to the reason that a BlueTooth device deosn't require line-of-sight contact, BlueTooth is getting more popular.

Close all the minimised apps right from the list in Nokia 7610

Posted on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Having a lot of applications on can make your mobile phone go slow. That also causes a havier demand on the battery and more processor usage. Usually every phone have some applications minimised always.

In the Nokia 7610 Usually we close them by selecting the application from the list that appears on holding the menu button pressed. There is another easier method to close those applications right from the menu.

Press and hold the menu key and a list of all the active items appears. With the application highlighted press 'c' and a question pops up ... ' Do u wish to exit ' app' ? ' . Press yes and you are done. You have just closed the application without activating it again , that too so quickly.

Good Luck!

Posted on Thursday, January 18, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

This discussion has been tested on Nokia 7610 and should work as well on related phones like Nokia 6600 etc.

When u recieve a file using Bluetooth or MMs it goes to the inbox. The options for the file do not show send via Bluetooth. So what will you do if you have to forward this file to another phone via Bluetooth..?
First you have to open it in the Real Player which is bundled with the phone. The vedio automatically starts playing. Press Stop ( and not pause ). Now take the options wihtin the player. An option named ' save ' wil be there.

Save the file to a folder in the gallery. Now you can forward the file by going to the gallery and pressing options.
Good Luck!

Give your Memmory Cards a Healthy Life

Posted on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Most of the Digital Portable Devices have a low internal memmory and have to depend on expandable memmory resources like the memmory cards. Such memmory cards are very delicate ( not physically ! ) and can become useless easily. But a little care can keep them with u for a long time.

A memory card like a SD card or a multimedia card can get corrupted if its file system is distroyed. Then it cannot be used any further. Special care has to be taken while file system is open and andy write process is occuring. Make sure u do the following.

* Do not switch off your camera ( Lets take this as an example ) while a new picture is being written to the card.
* Do not eject the card while your cam is still on.
* Do not move the files to a computer using the windows explorer. Use the associated software. If you are using windows explorer copy the files instead of moving them.
* Do not format your card using windows explorer. Format it using ur cam.
* Format the card at regular intervals. Do not use it for a long time ( like 6 months ) without a format.
* Do not bend the Card or expose to heat or extremes of weather.

Its aways the little things that make big changes.

One More Usage Tip For Nokia SmartPhones

Posted on Friday, January 05, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

This tip is to make browsing your Nokia Smartphone faster. ( Phones like
Nokia 7610 , Nokia 6610 , Nokia N72 etc. )

Nokia Smartphones are fully loaded. But if you place individual files in a
directory, the phone shows ' Opening files ' each time it opens that folder.
If you have files in the root directory it will show this message every time
you come to the root directory.

For eg :
If the root directory of your phone C:// have a file named photo.jpg , then
each time you come to this root directory the phone will show a similar
message.

Try moving the file to a folder and the message will not come gain. So the
tip is : Do not place individaul files in the root directory. Group
individaul files in to a folder so as to browse faster.

10 Tips for Conserving Battery of your Mobile Phone

Posted on Saturday, December 30, 2006 by Arun Basil Lal

Ten Tips For Conserving Battery of Your Mobile Phones The more smart your mobile device is, the faster your battery gets exaused. Here are some tips to conserve battery so that you can keep connecting longer.

  1. Use the device only when it is needed. Browsing through the phone without a purpose can be a waste of power.
  2. Do not keep the bluetooth switched on always. Bluetooth drains the battery. Use it only when needed.
  3. Try to use the phone in areas with good network coverage. When the network coverage is poor the phone maintains the connection by increasing the frequency of the waves which costs more battery. For eg. You can go the the attic of your home while making calls from home. Usually at considerable heights the coverage will be more.
  4. Do not let kids play games on your mobile phones. Gaming keeps the backlight lit for long duration and drains battery
  5. Ni-cad batteries perform better when discharged completely ( only once in a while ) before recharge. Refer to the manuel of your device.
  6. Use the specified battery and the specified charger.
  7. Do not discharge the battery by any means other than the mobile device
  8. Use cables to connect the mobile devices to a computer, if you have one. Using bluetooth instead can be comfortable, but bluetooth drains battery.
  9. Write the messages on a PC and upload it to a mobile. This functionality is available with most of the smart phones. Doing so can be really comfortable as you dont have to keep pressing keys to type the message. This saves battery.
  10. Switch off the mobile phones in restricted areas ( like inside aircrafts ).

But remember that, conservation does not mean denial of use. Still these tips can come handy when you are running out of power and does not have the scope for a reacharge.
