Million Clues! Joins the Dot Com Family

Posted on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

Million Clues.COM
Finally we are in the dot com hall of fame. Today, we registered our own domain as millionclues.com. All visits to millionclues.blogspot.com will be redirected automatically once the shifting is completely over. We had been using the co.nr redirection service from freedomain.co.nr for a while. This will continue for another couple of weeks.

The domain is registered with Go Daddy via Blogger and now we have full DNS control over the domain. Integration with Google products and protection against spam are also offered along with the registration.

A Google Apps Account was also created automatically. Google Apps provides free email service for users in this domain. Now we have a new mail id: arunbasillal at millionclues dot com. Google Apps also includes Chat, Calendar, Google Sites and it can create Sub-Domains for millionclues.com.

Blogger will automatically transfer all previous posts to the new domain. This is expected to be complete in another 24 hours. The pages are already linked via the new domain, but accessing a page reports a ‘Page Not Found 404’ error right now. This will be back to normal once the transfer is over. To access individual pages, type in ‘.blogspot’ to the end of the individual page address in the address bar of your browser. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Welcome aboard to Millionclues.com

Some Things In Life Never Change: Here are few such things

Posted on Friday, May 16, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

Things In Life That Never ChangeSomebody rightly said that 'Some Things in Life Never Change'. Science and Technology have changed our ways and walks of life. Changes can be felt every single day. Newer and better gadgets show up at the stores every week. But still there are some things that never fall out of our life. No matter how far Technology has come, these things have stayed more or less the same over these years.

Watches : We are speaking of Analog Watches. Digital Watches are available with accuracy of upto one second in one million years (i.e one second variation from the real time over one million years). Many digital watches can show temperature and altitute and can even check your emails. But still the glory and style of the traditional analog watches is different. People prefer to see the mechanical movement of the dials more than the style of the silicon controlled displays.

Pencils : We live in a world which has got everything from ball-point pens to laser markers. But pencils still have a very special place in our lives. Technology has not really affected the use and production of pencils. Pencils are used even by space travellers so that they can write in conditions where there is no atmospheric pressure to push the ink out of the ball-point pens!

Calculators : Calculators first came to our lives first in the form of abacus. Abacus is still used in many parts of the world. The electronic calculators as we see today came back in the 1930's. After that many devices including the computer came in front of us. But still we use these electronic calculators for daily mathematical works owing to their low cost and simplicity of use.

Floppies : There was a time when you had to install windows using a bunch of floppies. But memmory have become so cheap that now you can store all the books in the oxford library in a thumb drive. But floppies are not out of the show. The newer laptops do not have floppy drives.. ok. But geeks still use the floppies to recover a system once it does not boot. The windows recovery comes very handy in a floppy.

Dot-Matrix Printer : With the advent of ink-jet and laset-jet printers, dot-matrix printers said good bye to house hold. But that did not mean that it was going to die. Dot-Matrix printers find application in shops and stores where cheap printing is required. The cost of printing using a Dot-Matrix printer is not even one-tenth that using a laser printer. May companies still have a range of Dot-Matrix printers.

Radio : When JL Bird invented Television, someone said that the era of listening is over and now its the time to see. Initially people found T.V very attractive. But we still have Radio transistors in every nook and corner. Even most modern mobile phones have FM Recieving. Many new Broadcasting Centers are coming up these days. Radio transmission now even uses satellites. Maybe its the busy life that still keeps Radio as a part of our day.

Incandescent Lamps : These are not energy-efficient, these are short-lived but these are cheap. Technological advances could invent energy efficient CFL Lamps and LED Lamps. But they all failed in the competition with the Edison Lamps. When you get a CFL for 100 Rs or a LED Lamp for 250 RS you can get a Incandescent Lamp for Rs 10. Today 1$=42Rs.

Printed Books : As we have seen, you can store whole of the Oxford Library in a thumb drive, but that does not stop the publishing industry to stop printing. Printed books still have roles to play in our lifes like it had to play when printing initially started. Maybe its the ease to read something printed that keeps it going.

Fax Machines : We live in an age of SMS and e-mails. But when things get official, we still use fax machines. Because fax is fast and simple.

Post : If emails are soft, post is hard. Personal communication using written mails have decreased. True. But still officail communication is through the normal post.

Ink Pens : Ink-pens may leak, they might not write at times. But its always a pleasure to write with an ink pen. This pleasure have kept the ink pens alive all thorughout the years. We have all the leading manufacturers of pens showcasing a range of ink pens.

Bicycles : You have cars, you have motor bikes. But that does not stop the production fo bicycles. Being a source of health and pleasure, bicycles still stay as a part of our life.

Match Boxes : Lighters can look elegant. But they cannot replace the Match Boxes from our house hold.

Candles : Advent of Electricity reduced the prodcution of candles. That is true. But the soothing effect of a candle is much different from the cold light of a electric lamp. Candles serve as light reserve durig camping and parties. Dating cannot happen without a candle-lit dinner. lol

Life is like that... Some things in life never change!

The Best Forward I Ever Received

Posted on Thursday, February 21, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

Forwarding mails is so popular because forwarding is a easy thing to do and it gives the reciever a feeling that he is being remembered. You get everything from News to Technology to Pictures to Information and the long list of forwards goes even up to first aid tips...

To be honest, I hate forwards... I usually tell my friends not to send me forwards unless they think that I should read it. But I read all the mails that I recieve, out of the fear of missing out some useful information and I recieve more forwards in a day than regular mail. Last day this forward struck my head.. maybe because everything written in there was absolultely correct. So I thought of putting it here. Here it goes ...

I want to thank all my friends and other unknown people who haveforwarded chain letters to me in 2003, 2004 & 2005 and 2006.Because of your kindness:

I stopped drinking Coca-Cola after I found out that it's good only forremoving toilet stains.

I stopped going to the movies for fear of sitting on a needle infectedwith AIDS

I smell like a wet dog since I stopped using deodorants because theycause cancer.

I also stopped answering the phone for fear that they may ask me todial a stupid number and then I get a phone bill from hell with callsto Uganda , Singapore and Tokyo.

I also stopped drinking water outside for fear that I will get sickfrom the rat shit and urine.

I also donated all my savings to the Amy Bruce account. A sick girlthat was about to die in the hospital about 7,000 times. (Poor girl!she's been 7 since 1993
My free Nokia phone never arrived and neither did the free passes for apaid vacation to Disneyland.

Made some Hundred wishes before forwarding those Dalai Lama, GaneshVandana, Tirupathi Balaji pics etc..Now most of those "Wishes" are already married (to someone else)! You can add your own notes based on your similar experience and sendthem to your friends.

If ORKUT deletes my account, it doesn't matter BUT PLEASE DON'T SEND me"Orkut is deleting accounts: Due to sudden rush..." Otherwise I'lldelete my ORKUT account!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not send this e-mail to at least 913760people in the next 10 seconds, a bird will shit on your head today at11:30
Give me a break!!
--- end of message ---
If you have your own additions give them here. All the credis of this forward goes to the origional person who wrote it first. ( If you are reading this do not leave without telling us that..ok ). Thanks to my friend Bharat for sending me this.. lol

And if you forward this to 10 of your friends within 10 minutes, you will recieve a 1000 dollar bill at 10.00 am tomorrow... ha ha

A Late Criticism Of the BlockBuster Movie Dhoom 2

Posted on Monday, April 30, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

Dear Readers ...
I have tried to do something different this time. I have critisized the movie DHOOM 2 [Bollywood]. I hope you will enjoy reading this.
Please note that i donot have any realtion with this movie. I really enjoyed this movie and appericiates their creative work. This must be considered as healthy criticism. Here they goes one by one....

* In the beginning Hritik Roshan [ Aaryan ] is shown to land via a parachute on a moving train . The train looks like a bullet train. It is very clear that his parachute is wide open behind him. One would not be able to stand on the top of such a train with a parchute wide open. He would be carried away by the wind.

* When Hritick goes to steal the diamond he is shown to stand in between some sculpture work. But how he reached there in between tight security and lots of cams and how did he make his exit is not shown. It would be really hard to reach there and get out of there unnoticed.

* Hritick tells Aishwarya Rai [ Sunaina ] to jump from the top of a cliff. A rope immediately appears in the view. From where did that come..?

* The coins in the museum are stolen from a sealed container in the presence of poilce. How did they do that..? The movie does not explain that.

* The coins were stolen from a museum in some exotic place ( I mean not in India ). But the Chase in the tunnel looks like India. Look at the cars there and the truck. So did Abhishek Bachan  [ Inspecter Jay ] and Uday Chopra [ Ali ] follow them all the way to India..? And did Hritick drive to India on the superbike..?

* In the Tunnel chase at the end Hritick is being followed by Abhi and Uday ... In between the chaise hritick shoots a big trailer and the trailer blocks the way and some cars crash on to it. In the next scene abhi and uday are shown to stop just in front of the trailer. Where did all the cars go..?

* Just after that ash sets the helicopter on fire with a bomb and abhi and uday are shown to make thir way out of the fire. When the helicopter was first shown its doors were closed. It would be impossible to open both the side doors of that copter and make that jumb in between the explosion. Remember they did that jumb really fast too.

* Hritick makes a jump from a cliff on his bike and opens his parachute. Abhi comes there and jumps the same jump and cathes Hritick in between thier flight. Remember Hritick made his jump with a superbike which was moving at a speed of atleast 150 kmph and Abhi made his jump by just running 3-4 meteres and made the distance. That looks impossible unless Abhi is really good at making really Loooong Jumps.

* Towards the end of the movie Hritick is shown to fall from a cliff bearing 3 bullets on his chest. But he comes back in the next scene without any explanation.

Hope you agree with these. All these adjustments have to be done in making Movies. But they have to keep improving to reach perfection.
Do not forget to post your comments.
Its your comments that make me work harder towards my blog.

Windows Vista Is Out Today

Posted on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 by Arun Basil Lal

The much awaited OS from Microsoft - Windows Vista is to be launched today. Microsoft describes Vista as their OS for the future. From now all the new PC's will be loaded with Vista.

There has been much talks about the need to upgrade to a new OS when people are so used with their present OS. Microsoft says their biggest enemy is Microsoft itself. People are so much attached with their present OS and do not wish to junk them for a new one. Moreover one has to shell out an extra $300 to get this new OS. Windows Vista Home edition costs $400.

But new PC users will have a fresh beggining with Vista. Some say that in future products will come up that areVista Compatible where users will need Windows Vista to run them. Vista has got the DotNet 3.0 Frame work and includes Direct X 10.

How to picture Youself great on Photographs

Posted on Saturday, November 25, 2006 by Arun Basil Lal

Photographs are frames extracted from the millions of frames of our day to day life so that we can see those frames often. But eveyone is not blessed with a photo face or everyone is not photogenic by "default".

Here is how you can play that fine.

  • If you are using a foundation cream, use those with a matt finish.
  • Make sure that your hair is clean and that you hairstyle is perfect.
  • Dont wear dresses with large and bold prints or bold patterns.
  • Do not wear all white as wearing all white can make your body look big and your face becomes small.
  • Do wear earrings and a necklace. Ornaments can make you look better in the picture
  • Make sure that you have got a normal hairstyle. Making your hair look bigger that you head can make the apperence of you in your picture horrible.
  • Have the normal style of smile on your face. Dont make up one.
  • Stand errect and still. This can make yourself look smart in your picture.

Keeping Your Emotions Under Control

Posted on by Arun Basil Lal

Having control over his emotions and the ability to think deeper makes man-kind distinct from other beings on this beautiful earth. Having control over ones emotions reflect the personality of the person in general and to the strength of his mind to be specific. People with strong control over their emotions are always liked by all.

Emotions are those ways in which the body expresses what is in the mind of the person. When we are not satisfied the way something is, the mind says the brain to get angry. Then we get angry. Rather than conrol over emotions one needs huge amount of emotional maturity to go on in this highly competitive world, where everyone is trying to get better and better to be the best one day.

To control anger when it comes to you, you just have to distract your mind from the thing. Stop doing what you were doing and relax. If you got an i-pod play your favorite track. Entertainment can really help to come out. But what we usually do is, we explode. Dont let yourslf do that. A liitle care and practice can help you to get over your anger.

Fear is another common emotion exibited. When you run out of time, or when you are about to face something hard, you feel afraid. The easiest way to get over it is to find a secure shelter. For eveyone of us the most secure place is the company of our friends of the same age-group. Call your friend or meet him and talk with him. You will find a lot relaxed. If you think that you are running out of time, stop working and relax for a moment. If you got lots of things to do, create a to-do list with more prirority to more urgent tasks.

Depression and hoplessness can make you a loser in life. When you feel miserable or feel like crying, move to a more remote place where you can be alone. If you have a bible or your holy book, try reading the very pleasing part of it which you have read before. Talk with your best friend. Or go online and chat with someone. You will definitely find your problems running away.

Having control over emotions is having control over oneself and your life. Life is a game and we are the mighty players. Always remember that our life is to enjoy and not to just live. Enjoy the gaming of life.

What U Do Not See in Formula 1

Posted on Monday, October 30, 2006 by Arun Basil Lal

What we see on the circuit is the end-product of hardwork of countlss number of enginers, technicians and researchers. There are some intresting things which we do no usually think of when we see Shumi or Alonso zooming ahead. Here are some intresting facts.

A Formula One car is an aeroplane in a modified form, built to run on land alone. A formula one car can go from 0 to 160 kmph in 4 seconds. The most amazing thing is that it can do the reverse too in 4 seconds, i.e 160kmph to 0kmph in 4 seconds!!!

Formula one cars use special tyres built to last only 90 to 120 kilometres while a normal tyre can last up to 100000 kilometres. So if your car uses a formula one tyre you will be spending money which would cost 2 times your whole car per year.

At a pitstop a well trained team can replace tyres in just 3 seconds! That's just the time which a normal technician takes to start loosening a nut of your normal tyre.

At top speeds a formula one tyres rotate at 50 rotations per second. An average ordinary car revs up to 6000 rpm at a maximum. An F1 car revs up to 18000rpm which means the pistons are moving up and down at 300 times per second.

Formula one car tyres are filled with nitrogen instead of air, because nitrogen has more consistant pressure. The pressure musn't vary a lot with temperature..right..?

In a race each tyre will loose around 500 grams and a race driver will loose 4 kilograms due to exposure to high G forces ( the same forces as u feel while standing in a bus taking a curve ), stress, adrenaline rush and the extreme temperature.

Formula one cars are refuelled at 12 litres per second. So you can get your car refuelled in just 4 seconds if you take your normal car to a pitstop. The refuelling gun which they insert consists of 2 passages. First the hot gases inside the fuel tank is sucked out and then only the fuel is pumped. There is a lot of risk in that procedure and a simple error can cause an explosion.

Formula 1 engines do not have a very long life. They need part replacements in every few hours. An engine is something which a car usually change when it comes to Formula 1 and something which  is never changed when it comes to a normal car.

The cogs of the gearbox of a F1 car is replaced after every race as it wears out due to shifting gears often and subjeaction to stress.

In aeroplanes the buoyant force created lifts it up. A F1 car is so aerodynamically designed so as to keep it fixed on to the ground. The speeds of a F1 car is so high that an aircraft can take off at slower speeds than a F1 car travels on the track. Remember Shumi once raced with an aircraft and won it !!
The aeordynamic downforce created by an F1 car is so high that in theory it can go upside down at 160kmph, holding itself to the ceiling of a tunnel or so.

Brake disks are made of Carbon Fibre in F1 cars and not of steel for the reason that while braking the disk reaches temperatures of 1000 degree celcious, high enough to melt steel.
When a F1 driver hits the brakes he experiences moments of deceleration comparable to a regular car driving through a solid wall at 300kmph.!!

F1 cars have around 100 sensors and the car has got over a kilometre of cable connecting them, to monitor the activities of various parts.

The 'cockpit' for a F1 car is so fit that a F1 driver has to first remove the steering by removing a latch before he can enter the car. The padddles for changing the gears are at the back of this wheel.

A F1 car has to go to race with 100% perfection. A 99.9% perfection means that the car has got 80 components wrong as an average F1 car has got 80000 components.!!

That's it. Send me more and get them all posted here. You will get all your credits.

Legendary 'Shumi' Bids GoodBye

Posted on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 by Arun Basil Lal

The all time grand prix legend Michael Schumacher says good bye to the official Formula 1 races but only after adding 7 world championships into his dashboard. His 30 year long career ended yesterday when he completed 4th in the 2006 Formula 1 championship in which Fernando Alonso was the champion ( second one in his career. First championship last year.) . His retire was taken to the hearts of millions of his fans with tears in their eyes yet with a sweet smile in their faces.

In his 30 year long career 'Shumi', as he is called by his fans, have added 7 world chamionships with 91 race wins and innumerable and unbeatable world records. His career brought Team Ferari back as the world leader. Ferari had fallen deep down and its only with the arrival of Schumacher in 1996 they started winning titles, that too after long 21 years.

The legend never dies. He still lives as the best racer of his time in the hearts of millions and millions of his fans. Never will such a legend come again in Formula 1. Shumi is simply the best.
