Nokia Buys Symbian for $400 Million!

Posted on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 by Arun Basil Lal

World leader in mobile phones, Nokia, just bought Symbian. VentureBeat reports that Nokia is going to keep the Symbian OS free. This might mean a slight dip in mobile prices of Nokia phones. More over this integration should mean better understanding of the needs of Nokia and thereby better mobile phones.

This purchase is going to put Nokia right in front of the war with Apple's iphone. So cell phone lovers watch-out. Nokia might be bringing some serious stuff very soon.

Press reports ...

" To be clear, Nokia already owned a large percentage of Symbian, but now it has bought the remaining shares to take total control. The all-cash deal is said to be worth around 265 million Euros, which is just over $400 million. "

now.. we all love symbian, for its api and application base and performance.

but the question is will other companies continue using symbian ?

like SE P990, and some moto Q series ones.

" Nokia is going to keep the Symbian OS free ". See this line... This would mean that Nokia is not going to charge others.

As you said, if other companies stop using symbian, then the users are going to have some serious problem. We have lots of third-party softwares out there for Symbian phones because its a standard platform. If only Nokia uses Symbian, then the amount of available software will go down.

Lets wait and see
